Skepticism about the use of sunlight in homes has been around for a long time. Homeowners have been struggling to find the perfect balance between the advantages and disadvantages of allowing the sun to shine in the house.
The chief culprits of allowing sunlight into our house are namely skylights and large windows. While filling the house with a desirable amount of natural light, they also welcome into the house the powerful ultraviolet rays, causing the furniture, flooring and walls to fade fast. Here are a few remedies to alleviate these fears and protect décor from the damaging ultraviolet light.
Window film- 99 per cent of the UV rays can be repelled with the help of professionally installed clear film applied to the inside of windows, seemingly judged the cleanest solution to protection from the sun. In the opinion of Tara Lindsay, Marketing VP and buyer for Decorium, “It doesn’t obstruct the view, allows the light to shine through and reduces glare, as well.” She also believes that it is designed to last a lifetime and is a modern- day alternative to curtains and drapes.
Roller Shades- Since curtains and blinds alone don’t prevent rays and solar heat from penetrating, a semi- transparent roller shade can do much to protect your home from the sun. It performs a powerful defensive role when installed beneath curtains and blinds. It can also be a stand-alone feature, with endless possibilities of fabric and patterns.
Artwork Protection- While it is best to avoid putting artwork on a wall that has direct exposure to sunlight, a clear cover, not unlike one for a smartphone, can be put over framed art and photos.
Furniture Coating- Applying a varnish with a brush on top of wooden furniture can do wonders when it comes to protection from the sun. The only precaution to be taken is to find the right type of sealant that matches the wood type.
Leather Conditioner- A good way of keeping leather furniture moist and looking great is to apply a conditioner. Leather, like human skin, needs moisturizing on constant exposure to sunlight.
