Purple is the new colour in town. This very vibrant 18-3838 Ultra Violet, judged Pantone’s colour of the year, begs home-owners to question- Why shouldn’t I get it? While earlier, reliable trends have often questioned the use of dark colours in homes, the world’s leading authority on colour, has given them the green light, with purple becoming the trendsetter. Award-winning Toronto-based Douglas design studio’s director Gordana DiMonte was quoted as saying that purple has been the “most polarizing colour when it comes to interior.”
He offers caution along the lines of balancing the darker hues. He felt that purple has been associated with magic, wisdom, mystery, nobility for most people while also representing overpowering and garish for few. The perfect use of purple comes through precision and fine application, rather than huge bands. It can be used to emphasize dominant furniture.
Contrasting views have also appeared in the form of Ms. Day, manager at Palazzetti furniture. She believes that it is hard for most Canadians to escape from White, Beige, Grey and Taupe. She thinks that purple is an acquired taste, especially when it comes to interiors.
Tara Lindsey, a recent customer at Decorium, believes that a person’s propensity for purple varies with variety. It can be dramatic and defining, meanwhile representing fun and flirty for some. Recent support has grown for darker shades representing a burgeoning romance, since it represents a long commitment. Some users have compared it to a marriage, feeling that such a long commitment should be approached with caution.
The owner of the award-winning Hope Designs, Lori Howard, suggest the use of purple in gardens, representing perennial and annual plantings. While some remain skeptical towards the use of darker hues by transgression from the traditional ones, support for this new bold approach has grown, especially since Pantone’s validation.
